SympTMM

Medical Need:

To develop and verify a new method to monitor the symptomatic toxicities and health-related quality of life of cancer patients who are undergoing and have undergone radiation therapy during their treatment.

SympTMM

Novel Symptomatic Toxic Mobile Monitor (SympTMM)

As the volume of new cancer patients each year steadily rises, the number of patients surviving cancer reflects this increase. However, improvements to both the quality and availability of cancer treatment allows these survivors to live disproportionately longer than in previous years. This trend taxes our current understanding of the impacts of acute radiation toxicities on the short and long term quality of life of survivors.

The current techniques used to monitor the physiological and psychological impact of cancer treatments are cumbersome, difficult for patients to respond to accurately, and do not possess ample temporal resolution for physicians to intervene in a timely manner, if required.

This technology seeks to remedy these problems by providing a physician customizable mobile monitoring application that will upload patient symptom data directly to their electronic health record (EHR).

To guide this effort, we will use four specific objectives to guide development:

1. Define user needs

2. Develop the mobile application

3. Conduct usability testing

4. Prepare the system for EHR integration

This will result in a mobile application ready for physician designed clinical research programs that will be invaluable to cancer patient treatment decisions and monitoring, extending this fortuitous trend in cancer survivorship.
